For the second year of our curatorial practices we have been set several group exhibition projects in which we are to make the artwork, organise the venue, curate the venue….basically we are in charge of anything that is involved with the making an exhibition.
To make our first one more challenging we have two spaces as the same time, the first one is a series of cabinets that reside in the main entrance of the university. The second one is dubbed as the “lift gallery” which is a wall located to one of the two lifts within the university. With both of these spaces we can link them together or have completely different pieces. Seeing as we have the cabinets we have to make something that will fit on the shelves, this can be an interesting challenge to those who either don’t work on a small scale or make 3D pieces. While they don’t have to be 3D it does seem to be a more viable option to make something 3D as if we all did small paintings we wouldn’t have enough space to show everyone’s work, whereas we could easily fit a few sculptural pieces onto each shelve.
The lift gallery space is seen as more of a challenge, as it is located next to a lift and the main stairs of the building not many people hang around in that area, rather just passing through to get to where they need to be. So when it comes to this space we need to make the artwork stand out and interesting to the viewers.
