Throughout this part of the course my practice has been looking into the concept of creating a sense of fear of an object without ever showing a clear image of what it is the person should be viewing. Through the use of storytelling in the form of archived material on the object a story is created. This story gives the illusion that the object has been around for a long time and is highly dangerous. Added elements like military documents further add to the concept that these are real and should be wary if you were to come across. All of these elements have developed over the three years on the course, starting back when they were nothing more than a project for filling a space. With the further projects a theme has developed more and more to allow me to get to the point where I feel I have enough background information that I can create work that while new, allows the viewer to finally get a greater understanding to what it it is the spikes truly are. The project at its current state is based around the idea that the work is starting to emerge on earth and the military are already looking into it to find ways to stop it. The work is mainly consisted of the archival based material, the idea that the spikes have been around for a while is added by the use of aged materials, written and drawn. to give the illusion this is old, and with the emergence of them the modern age is accumulating all available resources on the spikes.
With the experimentation and insight gained from this term the plan is to take what has worked and further refine till the point I can produce a series of archival inspired material that can look the part whilst still fitting into the style of work I’ve been working on during the time on the course. The work is based much interaction as it is creating a sense of fear of an object without showing the true object to the viewer.. The added element of making the pieces look old allows me to make use of the equipment used in archiving books, documents etc. This adds much more to the pieces that were originally framed, you get a better sense of them being fragile and old. Further research into forms of weathering, either through techniques developed for model making and prop making. Combining the two different styles will produce a series of work that has all the trademarks of traditional archival material, yet at the same time the power to draw in a viewer and make them believe what they just saw. The general direction is leading to an installation piece cataloging all the different types of archive material that has been gathered.
